Union general (1815–1872), known as ‘Old Brains,’ who, despite his administrative skill as general in chief, failed to achieve an overall battle strategy for Union forces. Lincoln once described him as ‘little more than a first rate clerk.’ Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite three-quarter length portrait of Halleck in uniform, by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink, “H. W. Halleck, Major Genl.” In fine condition, with some trivial soiling and subtle silvering to dark areas of the image.
