Union general (1813-1884) who led the engineer brigade at the Army of the Potomac. Civil War-dated ALS signed “H. W. Benham,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Headquarters Engineer Brigade letterhead, February 13, 1864. Written from "Camp at Washington," in part: "I wrote you a note yesterday which I trust you received to day in which I told you I would send on three copies of Col. Holts report, which I hope it might be possible to get into different newspapers in New York. Now that I have the written order of the 'approval' of Mr. Stanton for its publication. If the Herald and the Tribune—and Times or either refuse to publish it I cannot but believe that the Post will do it as I much I like to see it in that paper—…with their 'private reasons for not publishing any thing about Gen'l Benham'—may now be changed…and has been caused as it has occurred to me it may be by requests from the War Dept. Mr. Wilson—the Senator—told me on Thursday that Mr. Stanton said to him that his impressions against me had been derived from McClellan and that he had learned to mortify his opinions about them. So I trust things are looking better." Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition, with a stain to the first page.
