Henry Robertson Bowers autograph letter signed to his sister, May just a few years before his death as part of Robert Falcon Scott's doomed Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica. From onboard the Royal Indian Marine Service gunboat Bhamo, he writes on R.I.M.S. letterhead, in part: ''...If I were aboard her [Northbrook] I would be pretty small spuds, but being the 'Bhamo jahaz ka Captain sahib' makes things very different...'' He also reveals his crush on a married woman: ''...You will think she must be an incorrigible flirt, but far from it...a glance at the Northbroook's officers was quite sufficient to show me that I was not the only one...I never let Mrs. V think I thought more of her than she did of me...'' He signs, ''Henry''. Bowers enlisted in the Royal Indian Marine Service in 1905. In June 1907 he was given temporary command of the R.I.M.S. Bhamo. Bowers would be the only member of the Scott expedition without polar experience. A member of the shore party, he died in the tent with Scott in November 1912. Letter runs 8pp. on card-style stationery and measures 5'' x 8''. Folds, else near fine.
