TLS, one page, 7.25 x 11, personal letterhead, September 16, 1948. Morgenthau writes Israel Goldstein, an American rabbi, Zionist leader, and one of the founders of Brandeis University. In part: “I am addressing this letter to you in your triple capacity as (1) National Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, (2) National Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal and (3) Treasurer of the Jewish Agency…May I please bring to your particular attention the second paragraph on page 3 [from Randolph Paul], which I quote herewith: ‘The importance of refraining from political activities is made very clear by the Bureau letter of September 2, 1948, dealing with the tax status of the Jewish Agency…Since it appears certain to us that the officials of the Bureau, if apprised of the facts, would conclude that the American Zionist Emergency Council and probably certain other Zionist organizations are engaging in carrying on propaganda….’ I would be pleased to discuss this matter with you on your return.” In very good condition, with creasing, wrinkling, soiling, two punch holes at the top of the page, and several erased pencil notations. Cautious words to the Zionist leader who would go on to lead the United Israel Appeal.
