An original watercolor paining, 15.75 x 20, done by Miller specifically for Brenda Venus, depicting a lone figure in a sailboat, with houses, mountains and sun in the background, signed and inscribed near the bottom in black ink, “To Darling Brenda, Henry Miller, 1978.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.25 x 27. In fine condition.

The famed Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn author found an outlet for his creativity not only through the written word but also via the paintbrush. Taking pleasure in simple process of creating watercolors—and having made thousands of them in his lifetime—this one was entitled “Man Alone on a Boat,” and depicts the inner thoughts of Miller at the time. In 1978 and nearing the end of his life, Miller viewed himself as a man alone in the universe—the natural fate of any true artist. Even so, the colors in this piece are bright, airy, happy, and serene, reflections of a man at peace with himself and his surroundings, perhaps the result of his companionship of Brenda Venus—“Darling Brenda”—to whom this work was presented and who served as Miller’s all-consuming passion during his last years.
