He was born in New York City, and suffered a rough childhood, but took up painting as form of solace and escape. His writing later awarded him great recognition, and he was deemed a powerful American voice. His writing style was self conscious, and he sometimes ranted and raved. By contrast, his painting had a much lighter mood, conveyed in bright colors and balanced forms. "When I write, I work," Miller said, "but when I paint I play." This playful quality really shows in his art. He didn't like to sell his paintings, but sometimes traded them for art supplies, or coffee at a Parisian cafe. "To paint is to love again," Miller said. This joyful quality is unique to Henry Miller's visual art. His paintings are now being recognized as an important part of the artistic life of a great 20th century writer. *
