Henry Werwin Shrady (1871-1922) was an outstanding American sculptor. He is perhaps best known for winning the competition for the $250,000 commission against fifty-one other sculptors for the Appomattox Memorial Monument to General Ulysses S. Grant. Among the many competitors were such esteemed sculptors as Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French.
