<B>Henry M. Stanley, </B></I><B><I>In Darkest Africa</B></I></B></I> (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891), first edition, two volumes, 547 and 540 pages, respectively, illustrated, green-cloth bindings with gold lettering and gold-and-black illustrations, 8vo (9" x 6"). Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) was born John Rowlands in Denbigh, Wales. Ostensibly a journalist for the <I>New York Herald</B></I>, he became a ruthless adventurer, fighting on both sides during the American Civil War, then attaining fame for his exploration of Africa and search for Scottish missionary David Livingstone (1813-1873). Stanley later was charged in the deaths of several Africans, having treated native people with brutality and indirectly helping to establish Leopold II of Belgium as ruler of the Congo. Volume I includes a 22.75" x 31" color map, "The Great Forest Region." Volume II includes a 17" x 28.25" color map, "The Route of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition Through Africa."
