Revolutionary War hero (1756–1818), father of Robert E. Lee, who captured British posts in New York and in the South and who later served as Governor of Virginia and as a US congressman. DS, signed “H. Lee Jr.,” seven pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 9.25, July 23, 1812. Lee addresses a fight over property he and his brother inherited. In part: “The answer of Henry Lee junior, to a bill of complaint exhibited in this honorable court against him and others by Thomas Howand…in the month of May 1809 this Defendant contracted to sell to Richard B. Lee…an estate in Loudon County commonly called ‘the sugar land estate’…for the sum of $20,000…since paid by the said Rd. B. Lee, and the conditions of the contract made in the month of May 1809, between the said Rd. B. Lee and this defendant have been reciprocally & completely reformed.” In very good condition with intersecting folds with separations along some of the folds, chips to the margins, and writing showing through. Remarkably dark text with Lee signing “Henry Lee” or “Genl H. Lee” five additional times in the text!
