Signed book: Letters Written by the Late Right Honourable Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, to his son Philip Stanhope, Esq; Late Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Dresden: Together with Several Other Pieces on various subjects, Volumes I and II. London: J. Dodsley, 1774. Hardcover, 9.25 x 11.75, 568 and 606 pages respectively. Each volume has been signed and inscribed on the first free end page, “John B. Laurens presented him by his Father, Henry Laurens.” The books themselves rate in fair and fragile condition, with detached covers, some partially detached pages, fragile spine and binding, toning to inside pages, chipping and surface loss to spine. Both signed pages are fine, with scattered light toning and soiling, and several pencil notations to bottom of the signed page of Volume I, none of which detracts from the bold and crisp signatures.
Laurens, a South Carolina merchant-planter, had served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and as its president for a year. Perhaps finding some type of inspirational message in Stanhope’s words prompted Laurens to offer these volumes to his own child, possibly before the start of the Revolution. Stanhope was an administrator of Ireland, and this book offered well-written observations of life. The younger Laurens may have gained inspiration of his own from the works, as in 1780, his father was asked to negotiate a treaty in the Netherlands, but the elder Laurens was captured by the British and imprisoned as a traitor for more than a year.
