Henry Hudson Kitson Native American Painting
The lot features an original work of art painting attributed to Henry Hudson Kitson, signed Kit and dated '06, 1906. The painting shows the side profile of a Native American Indian man, presumable either a Warrior or Chief in wonderful detail in the original early 1900’s frame. Henry Hudson Kitson (April 9, 1863 – June 26, 1947) was an English-American artist and sculptor who sculpted many representations of American military heroes. He is perhaps best known in the U.S. for his sculpture of the "Minute Man" on Lexington Green, in Lexington, Massachusetts. The subject of this painting, possibly Apache or Navajo, is wrapped in a Navajo Chief’s Blanket. Based on historical records, the subject is most likely male due to the hairband worn. The rear of the painting has a placard attached that reads, "Henry Kitson 1863-1947". Those are the dates recorded for Henry Hudson Kitson. No similar works of art have been found attributable to Kitson, and his sculptures usually had his full signature inscribed. The piece could very while likely be an authentic Henry Hudson Kitson but due to the discrepancy in median and difference in signature the work cannot be verified or guaranteed.
This painting is in a well preserved condition, mounted in a matted black shadowbox style wood frame with gold gilt inner trim. Frame edges have edge scuffing and denting as one might find on a frame over one hundred years in age. No other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 4.5" x 6.5"L, frame is 14.25"W x 16.25"L x 2"D
