Appointed 1850 as general freight agent of The Pennsylvania Railroad; held part ownership in about 20 steamers on the Lakes and 21 ocean vessels; operated in petroleum in the early days in gold and silver mines in the West. Among the corporations in which he was a director and stockholder were The Pennsylvania Railroad, The Pennsylvania Steel Co., The Inman Steamship Co., The International Navigation Co., The Pacific Mail Steamship Co., The Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railroad, The Erie & Western Transportation Co., and The Cumberland Valley Railroad; plus others.
