Real estate and railroad entrepreneur and president of the Standard Oil Company (1830–1913) who set out to make Florida the ‘Newport of the South’ by providing extensive rail access and grand hotels to lure wealthy vacationers. Vintage matte-finish 13.25 x 16.25 Frank Puffer portrait photo on its original 14 x 18.5 mount, inscribed in fountain pen in another hand “Hon. John D. Crimmins, with all good wishes, February 20th, 1913,” and signed “H. M. Flagler.” Light creasing to mount, scattered surface marks (one at top of head), and unobtrusive professional repairs to background, otherwise fine condition. Crimmins’s construction firm played a prominent role in the renovation and construction of modern New York City, building most of the city's elevated railways, many of its buildings, hospitals, and churches, and laying the first underground lines for telegraph and telephone cables. One observer once wrote that “few New Yorkers have set their mark deeper upon the very form and structure of the city. In the laying out and construction of streets, of parks and parkways, of great buildings, and in the services rendered in the creation of institutions which are the city's pride….”
