Henry Dunant ALS 1858
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Jean Henry Dunant autograph letter signed, in French, dated 22 February 1858. In this year, Dunant, a Swiss businessman and activist, published his first book, ''An Account of the Regency in Tunis,'' based on his travels there. In this four page letter from Geneva, Dunant announces to Count Raffo in the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that he is presenting a copy of that book to him and to others in the Tunisian government. Dunant goes on to describe how this book has opened up many opportunities for him. The letter reads in part: ''...I have the honor, because of my work on Tunis, to be nominated for membership in several important learned societies, such as: La Societe Orientale de France...the editors of the 'Journal des debats' have asked me for permission to place in their newspaper, one of the premier in France, entire portions of my work''. Signed boldly: ''J. Henry Dunant''. The influence of Dunant's books would be integral to his worldwide influence in founding the International Committee of the Red Cross. The year after this letter, Dunant witnessed the devastation caused by the battle of Solferino in present day Italy between the Franco-Sardinian Alliance and Austria. The lack of care for the wounded prompted Dunant to organize hospitals and arrange for medical care. With the publication of his 1862 book, ''A Memory of Solferino,'' he began promoting his ideas for a neutral organization to treat soldiers. His efforts resulted in the 1863 founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Dunant received the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for his role in the establishment of this organization. The 8.25'' x 10.5'' letter has expected folds and minor foxing, else very good.
