Henry Deringer .50 Cal. Pocket Pistol c. 1850-1860
This is a fine original “Classic” Henry Deringer medium size percussion pocket pistol in a .50 caliber circa 1850-1860’s. This 4-inch barrel pistol with desirable original wood ram rod is in fine original condition. These famed Henry Deringer pocket pistols were so often copied by makers in America and Europe, with this being a very scarce original piece. The piece is correctly marked on the top of the breech, “DERINGER” over “PHILADEL” with the typical H. Deringer “P” proof stamp in the left flat of the breech with sunburst rays emanating from it. The metal surfaces have an attractive aged original patina with extensive excellently engraved German Silver mountings (flash shield under the hammer, escutcheons, fore-end cap, initial shield, etc.) along with the correct back action lock plate also engraved and marked “DERINGER PHILADELA.” This shows a classic checkered birds head grip and the 4-inch barrel having the correct seven-groove rifling (almost all patent infringement and copies used a different number of grooves, yet another attribution to this piece’s wonderful authenticity). This example has the two silver bands inlaid at the breech end of the barrel, a deluxe feature indication a higher grade of pistol. This Deringer also has the rare and very desirable hinged round “cap box” in the butt end of the stock used for holding extra percussion caps, few pistols were made with this extra option. Excellent Mechanical function. This a wonderful example of a classic larger size Henry Deringer pocket pistol of such historical importance and fame. President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in circa 1865 with one very like this, but of a slightly smaller size. A true and honest original Henry Deringer made percussion pistol, such as this, do not frequently show up on the collector market. Henry Deringer (1786-1868) was an Philadelphia, American gunsmith and is best known for his invention and namesake to the Deringer (Derringer) pistol. One of the finest examples available for purchase. Antique Firearm NO FFL.
