Distinguished statesman, US senator, secretary of state, speaker of the house, and three-time presidential candidate (1777–1852) who became known as the ‘Great Compromiser’ for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. Desirable hand-addressed and free-franked mailing envelope, 5.5 x 3, addressed by Clay to “Nicholas Dean Esq, 74 Broadway, City of New York,” and franked in the upper right, “Free, H. Clay.” The panel is postmarked April 10, Lexington, Kentucky, and bears a ‘Free’ ink stamp. Handsomely double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 12 x 16. Scattered creases and toning, and a couple trivial edge tears, otherwise fine condition.
