Distinguished statesman (1777–1852) who became known as the ‘Great Compromiser’ for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. LS signed “H. Clay,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.75, February 28, 1848. Letter to a gentleman. Clay politely declines an invitation to visit “the Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church at Princeton.” Lightly toned intersecting folds and slight show-through from docketing to reverse of last page, otherwise fine condition.
