Distinguished statesman, US senator, secretary of state, speaker of the house, and three-time presidential candidate (1777–1852) who became known as the ‘Great Compromiser’ for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. Third-person ADS, signed in the text, “Clay,” “Mr. Clay,” and “Mr. Clay’s,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 9, circa 1802. Autograph document in which Clay calculates financial details involved in a “Judgment in the Circuit Court of the United States for the Kentucky District” for $4332.97, including information about payments, costs, and interest. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, moderate show-through from writing to opposing sides, light scattered soiling, and a small hole to the lower right of the first page. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Clay. Most likely a working draft to later be copied out by a clerk. Clay would have been 25 years old when writing this, and it is the earliest document from him we have ever offered.
