ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 8 x 7, April 19, 1826. Handwritten letter to John Smith, making reference to the Virginian heritage of Secretary of War James Barbour. In part: "I rec'd your letter…soliciting an appointment which is made through another department, (that of the Sec'y of War) and with which therefore I have nothing to do, I have sent to that department. There needs no other refutation of the observation of your correspondent 'that no person would be appointed to office from Virginia, during the present administration' than the fact that the Secretary of War has himself been so appointed." Mounted below a hand-colored engraving of Clay and framed to an overall size of 10.5 x 23. In fine condition, with scattered light foxing and wrinkling.
