Henry Clay Autograph Letter Signed, "H Clay". One page, 7.5" x 7.5", Washington, D.C., December 25, 1827, to one I.G. Rowland. This letter was written while the versatile Clay served as United States Secretary of State. Writing on Christmas Day, he amazingly took the time to respond to a request for a minor favor. The letter partially reads, "I recd your letter of the 22d inst in recommendation of...Mr. Nehemiah Stockly, whose wishes I should be glad to promote....At present there is no vacant clerkship in the Department to which I am attached. If any should occur, I will give to his application full consideration. I do not interfere with appointments in the other departments, but if there should be any vacancies I will take pleasure in bearing such testimony in his behalf as I may be able to render. I am glad to learn from you that the friends of the Administration are likely to act in harmony, in the support of a candidate to Congress. More depends on the decision of Delaware, in respect to that election, than is generally believed...". Normal creases from folds, light fading and browning. Very Good condition. Framed with an engraved portrait of Clay. 20.75" x 13.75" overall.
