Henry Clay 1844 Presidential Campaign Ribbon.
Henry Clay 1844 Presidential Campaign Ribbon. White silk imprinted with black ink, 2.75" x 8.75". Headlined "Clay and Tariff", this ribbon was issued for the "Democratic Whig Young Men's National Convention, May 2, 1844". Featured is a framed portrait of Clay above the following poem: "STAR OF THE WEST: a million eyes, Are turning gladly unto him; The shrine of old idolatries Before his kindling light grows dim; And men awake as from a dream, Or meteors dazzling to betray; And bow before his purer beam, the earnest of a better day. Whittier". The signatory here is surely the celebrated John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), a politically minded poet, who championed social reform. This scarce ribbon is in excellent overall condition and exhibits only light aging at top and bottom.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
