Henry Brockholst Livingston Autograph Letter Signed “Brockholst Livingston”. One page, 7.5” x 12.25”, New York, April 14, 1797, to W. Lauphey. In this letter Livingston assesses the chances of success in an unspecified case: “As to the suit of chancery, the object of which is to perpetuate our testimony, not one of the defendants has filed an answer. They are all in contempt, & all arguments have issued to compel them to answer - I am not however very sanguine of success…”. In 1806 President Thomas Jefferson appointed Livingston to the Supreme Court, and he served as an Associate Justice until death in 1823. The letter has a few splits in the fold creases, with a small area of loss at the left margin, else very good. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
