This Henry Alcock porcelain serving platter is impressive!

It is a 14 x 9 1/4-inch oval with a 9 1/2-inch x 6 1/4-inch base. It is 1 1/2 inches deep. The platter is encircled with a layered four-petalled flower design which trails from the edge toward the center, in a "woods to meadow" effect. This design is flow blue transferware with gold highlights on the embossed integrated handles.

The bottom shows the maker's mark, with "Utopia/Semi Porcelain" and "Henry Alcock & Co./England" on the top and bottom of the crown and shield. On the side of the bottom is an incised registered number of RD (a small D just above the R) No 183193. A "2" in blue appears at an angle to the maker's mark.

This platter was manufactured in the 1860s. although is has some crazing of the glaze in the bottom and a small brown spot on the top and bottom, it is in remarkably good condition for its age.

This will make a wonderful addition to a porcelain servingware collection!

Henry Alcock and Company began in 1861 at the Elder Pottery in Cobridge, England. John Alcock, a relative of Henry's, had operated Elder Pottery until this time. The company produced earthenware for general use, including white graniteware made exclusively for the American market as "Ironstone China" and "Parisian porcelain." The firm continued at Cobridge until 1910 when it moved to the Clarence Works at Stoke-on-Trent. The firm continued at Stoke as The Henry Alcock Pottery until 1935.
