American statesman and diplomat (1806-1876) who served as a brigadier general in the Confederate army, where he fought beside Lee at Appomattox Court House. His most notable act as governor of Virginia was to sign the death warrant of famed abolitionist John Brown. Partial Civil War-dated ALS, one page, 5.25 x 9.75, July 16, 1862. A letter of condolences written from "Head Quarters" at Chaffin's Farm in Henrico County, Virginia, in part: "Yours of yesterday came to hand. I know well, too well your…[e]arthly loss in your good, gallant,…Look up to the Great Fountain…and you will become so com—…You know, my dear Madam…sufferer, exactly & lately like…speak by experience—oh! how…to the human heart, to…of immortality, how heavenly calm…& I will not long hence follow. Is it not selfish to complain that we…than that they should mourn…[b]ut a matter of time, soon it will be…I promise you to guard and…He is a jewel you must prize:—…of the departed." Encapsulated in a Mylar sleeve. In very good condition, with trimmed left edge affecting text, repaired intersecting folds, and stains affecting appearance but not readability.
