American statesman and diplomat (1806–1876) who served as a brigadier general in the Confederate army, where he fought beside Lee at Appomattox Court House. His most notable act as governor of Virginia was to sign the death warrant of famed abolitionist John Brown. ALS, one page, 8 x 10, House of Representatives, July 20, 1840. Letter to S. P. Walker. In part: “You had no business to write poems which I could not remember. It is none of your business, but much of my pleasure to go to Phila. this week.” Walker has written his response to Wise on the second integral page. Intersecting folds, a few creases, and tack holes to the left border, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Wise.
