French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher of science (1854–1912) who famously formulated the ‘Poincare Conjecture,’ which went unsolved for nearly a century. ALS in French, signed “Poincare,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, April 24, 1889, from Nancy, France. Letter to the secretary of the Society of Mathematicians, in part (translated): “I have sent you the day before yesterday the list of the members of the society after having marked with pencil the names of the people to whom the circular can be sent...I have not sent my contribution...but I believe that no confusion will be possible since this list is most probably the only one you will receive dated from Nancy.” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds and light soiling.
