Physicist (1852-1908). An expert on fluorescence, he discovered the Becquerel rays, emitted from the uranium salts in pitchblende, which led to the isolation of radium and to the beginnings of modern nuclear physics. For his discovery of radioactivity he shared the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics with the Curies. Autograph note, in French, on the front of one of his 3.5 x 2 personal calling cards, October 25, 1903. Written on the front of his calling card, incorporating his printed name into the beginning of the note, in full (translated): “[Mr & Mrs Henry Becquerel] send to Mr and Mrs Warburg in their best wishes, and wish to reiterate how delighted they were to see them again this fall at Meran.” In fine condition, with mild overall toning, a bit heavier in a couple of spots.
