Hendrik van Loon. Journalist, author, illustrator, whose books reached their apex of popularity in the 1920s and '30s. His writings include The Story of Mankind, The Story of the Bible, America, Van Loon's Geography, etc. He received the Newberry Medal. As a newspaper correspondent, he travelled extensively to war zones. Unusual trio of papers: Typed outline for projected book with comment in his hand; 2 pages of his letterhead, one with his comment, the other with six manuscript lines beginning and ending "...God help us all," signed with initial "H." The preceding all in his hand. With four envelopes, addressed in his hand to Dr. Paul Schwarz in N.Y.C., 1943, each illustrated by van Loon in pen-and-ink and watercolor, showing a sailing ship, a waiter, a walking figure whose crown has blown off his head, and an archway. Each envelope 4 x 71/2 and magnificently done. Very fine and unusual group.
