After a boyhood spent in Massachusetts, on a Texas cattle ranch, and in a small
Kansas town, William Penhallow Henderson studied art in Boston with Edmund C.
Tarbel. In 1901, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts awarded Henderson a three-year
traveling scholarship that enabled him to study abroad and to see much of
Europe.

He subsequently painted, illustrated, and taught in Chicago before
moving to Santa Fe in 1916. Until his death in 1943, Henderson was a
productive mural and easel painter, architect, and furniture designer,
incorporating Indian and Hispanic themes and imagery into his work. Under the
auspices of the Works Progress Administration, in the 1930s he completed easel
paintings and six murals for the Santa Fe Federal Court Building. His work is
immediately recognizable for its high-keyed, emotive color and expressive form.
