Ernest Hemingway's ''Green Hills of Africa'' signed ''Papa'' and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: ''To Clara [Spiegel] who has seen and been in Africa / this attempt to do the same / with love Papa [underlined].'' A fellow author, Spiegel was a good friend of Hemingway's with whom he socialized when he visited Sun Valley. Book also includes a 6.5'' x 4.25'' autograph note in pencil by Hemingway on one page, front and verso reading: ''To Do For Paris Book -Write Bicycle Racing.-'' and on the verso: ''as her hatred for me / began after she had / learned to write dialogue / from a book I had / written which had / been successful.'' The ''Paris Book'' he refers to is ''A Moveable Feast,'' which he was working on in Sun Valley in 1958; the other note (''as her hatred…'') refers to his relationship with Gertrude Stein which takes up two chapters in ''A Moveable Feast.'' Charles Scribner's Sons: New York: 1953. In publisher's original green cloth boards with front cover blindstamped and lettered in gilt. Also in original dustjacket, which has significant tears and a large portion of rear panel missing. Book and note are both in very good condition.
