Ernest Hemingway signed first printing of ''For Whom the Bell Tolls.'' New York: Charles Scribner's Sons: 1940. True first edition, indicated by Scribner's A on copyright page. Hemingway inscribes this volume to Cuco Kholy, his Cuban doctor and one of his closest friends. He writes in fountain pen on the front free endpaper, ''To Cuco, our true and loyal friend and good companion. Ernesto y Marty''. Hemingway here refers to his wife Martha Gellhorn, to whom he was married from 1940-45 and who reportedly inspired this novel. Book, without the dustjacket, is in very good condition with uniform toning and light foxing on signature page. Binding is starting to loosen and boards are uniformly darkened. Overall, a very attractive copy with a fine and unique inscription by Hemingway.
