German military officer (1800–1891) who was chief of staff of the Prussian army for 30 years and who is regarded as one of the foremost military strategists of the 19th century. Original vintage 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of von Moltke in uniform, by F. Jarmath and Son of Berlin (and so stamped on the reverse), signed in black ink. Written on the reverse, in the hand of the photo’s original recipient is “I sent this Carte to Gen. von Moltke at Versailles by Post, on Nov. 5, 1870, and received it back (signed) Nov. 15, 1870.” In fine condition, with some scattered light spotting to image. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
