Helen Taft. Unusual A.L.S., 3 pp., on letterhead of "The White House, Washington," May 6 [1911], to Mr. Clifton, The Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Co., rubber stamped "Answered May 9, 1911," the third year of Taft's Presidency. (Clifton was President of the automaker.) She sends detailed instructions on the type of cars for the President's use, explaining that the chauffeur "has been...ill from rheumatism in the hospital." She wishes "the same Limousine as we had...very good to have the 66-horsepower car." She selects blue as the color for the limousine and also discusses a touring car "only...(with) tan upholstery." Mrs. Taft was said to have been more eager for her husband to be President than he was. Her interest in such details of the President appearing in public, as this letter presents, reaffirms that view. Nice dark script. Interesting association letter: from a First Lady to what was probably the premier American car company of its era. (Wilson also favored the marque.) Very fine.
