Item Overview Description: Title: The Story of Little Black Sambo Author: Helen Bannerman - Helen Bannerman was a Scottish author of children's books. She is best known for her first book, "Little Black Sambo." (Courtesy Wikipedia) Publisher: Grant Richards City: London Year: 1900 Printing Information: Other - see description Binding Style: Hardcover Pagination: 113 pages Width: 3" Height: 5" Book Details: This early printing of Helen Bannerman's classic and sometimes controversial children's story "Little Black Sambo" is bound by green cloth covered boards with the title emblazoned in black ink on the front cover and spine amidst a minimalist pattern. The text features numerous illustrations and the verso of each leaf is blank. By today's standards this is something of a problematic and racially charged tale, though "critics of the time observed that Bannerman presents one of the first black heroes in children's literature and regarded the book as positively portraying black characters in both the text and pictures, especially in comparison to the more negative books of that era that depicted blacks as simple and uncivilised." [Courtesy Wikipedia] Condition / Notes: This text shows some typical indications of age and wear including some light toning, rubbing, and soiling on its boards. There is a partial crack in the front hinge though the pages remain solid and intact. It appears that the back hinge has been neatly repaired at some point. There is a handwritten note in pencil on the verso of one page. Some light toning is visible on the pages though the text and illustrations remain clear, bright, and legible. - 10393-050518-IN-02126
