Influential French composer (1803–1869) of such repertory staples as the programmatic ‘Symphonie Fantastique,’ the opera ‘Les Troyens,’ and the colorful ‘travelogue in tones’ Harold in Italy. ALS in French, signed “H. Berlioz,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, July 17, 1864. Letter to publisher Gustave Heinze, in full (translated): “Would you be kind enough to let me know if my three volumes ‘à travers chants,’ ‘les grotesques de la musique,’ and the ‘soirées de l’orchestre’ are published. I saw the one ‘à travers chants,’ but I don’t know anything about the others, and Mr. Pohl to whom I have written three times did not deign to reply. Be kind enough to send me a copy of the published volumes. I will be very grateful.” Small separations along central horizontal and vertical folds, a mild shade of toning over text and signature from previous display, and some light creases, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Berlioz’s hand. Pohl was a critic and writer as well as a translator. In 1864, Heinze published Richard Pohl’s long-delayed German translations of Berlioz’s three works in the four-volume ‘Gesammelte Schriften.’ An insightful look into Berlioz’s personality.
