Heavy metal nineteenth Century cast electrotype reproduction of a 16th Century shield of German or Netherlandish workmanship (original reportedly hanging as of 1989, in the Historical Museum in Dresden), approx. 21” in diameter, well-made with figures showing very good detail in casting and in overall very good condition; accompanied by a hand-written note “hung in my grandmother’s dining room in 1940’s-50’s; her uncle gave it to her. He collected antiques- probably bought in 1910-1920. Made in 1850’s. Mom Kaye”. Also copies of letters from Southeby’s and Christie’s East from 1990 concerning their opinion of the piece being a nineteenth Century copy and a 1989-dated letter from The Metropolitan Museum of Art also opining that “These copies were intended for collectors and also for educational institutions for whom copies and casts served to demonstrate the arts of past generations of craftsmen”. A fine antique representation of an ancient piece. Est.: $500-$1,000.
