Heavy barrel half stocked Plains type percussion rifle, .44 cal., 42” octagon barrel, with script initials “T.M.C.” on top barrel flat, brown patina, double set triggers, iron trigger guard, iron butt plate old iron reinforced panels at the wrist on each side; blacksmith made buckhorn rear sight and small bone or ivory blade front sight. This gun is in overall good condition showing a pleasing untouched appearance. The dark patina to the barrel is even and there are scattered areas of erosion and marks from years of carry and storage; the action does not stay on full cock and there is moderate pitting around the firing area; the percussion nipple is a replacement. There is a quarter size silver inlay in the right butt stock and an old repair to the lower rear toe of the butt stock. Accompanying this lot is a folder with consignor note of his belief that this gun was a product of Thomas McCaughie who was in the St. Louis, Missouri directories circa 1857-1859. A great looking “goin’ West” heavy barrel rifle. Est.: $3,500-$4,500.
