"He Knew Lincoln" by Ida Tarbell

Signed by the author and dated March 25, 1907. This book came from the estate of John and Jean Siddall. John was the editor of The American Magazine in the mid to late 20's. Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, and Ray Stannard Baker had left McClure's magazine and created the American Magazine. When first created, it was a "muckraker" (todays term - investigative reporting) magazine. When John Siddall came aboard as the editor, he steered the magazine in a different direction - to cater to women. The sales more than doubled. Many, many noted writers contributed articles to this magazine. In this collection from the estate, there are many books by these authors that are signed, including 4 more by Ida Tarbell.

Tarbell was hired as an editor in 1894, and soon became "McClure?s" most successful writer when her series on Abraham Lincoln nearly doubled the circulation of the magazine. Another serialized biography followed, this time on Napoleon, establishing her as a gifted historical writer and an insightful judge of character.

The book is in so-so condition. There are several loose pages. Front cover slightly separated on the inside. There is minor wear on the corners of the cover, front and back and the spines. The edge of the pages are deckled. Dark blue cloth binding. There are 6 Jay Hambidge illustrations.
