Hayes & Wheeler: A Most Unusual Campaign Hatchet
Hayes & Wheeler: One Of The Most Unusual Campaign Novelties We Have Encountered For This 1876 Republican Ticket. This item celebrates the Centennial as well as the Republican candidates. It is a miniature gilt brass hatchet with a profile of Washington and "Washington 76". The selection of the hatchet motif is obvious: according to Parson Weems a youthful GW used one to chop down the cherry tree. During the Centennial of 1876 as well as the 1889 Centennial of Washington's inauguration numerous items were produced in the shape of hatchets. What makes this one so interesting is the text on the reverse side: "Centennial Pt. & V. Pt. Hayes & Wheeler 1876." Excellent condition with traces of original gilding remaining. Original brass loop for suspension. Length: 39mm.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
