Hawaii 1883 Half Dollar. 1883. King Kalakaua I. PCGS graded Mint State 65. Gorgeous full toning in shades that range from antique silver to blue and include golden and pastel pink shades. Both sides are immediately seen to be in outstanding Gem condition. The surfaces shine with mint freshness; the luster skips and dances across the fields and throughout the devices; like a splendid Morgan Silver Dollar this coin has full cartwheel spin to its luster. As for the strike: how about 100% bold? None finer could be imagined, as indeed this is among the finest business strikes ever offered! King Kalakaua reigned from 1874 until his death in 1891. His rule was benign, if somewhat controversial in its spendthrift way. Kalakaua spent many happy hours in his boathouse near the palace, gambling, drinking, and composing stories (which after his death were published in a fine volume). He was also a proficient songwriter. His "Hawaii Po'noi" has been adopted as the Hawaii State song and is sung every Friday at noon at the gazebo on the Palace grounds in downtown Honolulu.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
