Havelock Ellis. English scientist who gave up medical practice to devote himself to research. His seven volumes based on his study of the psychology of sex appeared from 1897 to 1928. Author of Love and Marriage, Psychology of Sex, etc. His own marriage was unique: he resided in the city, his wife on a farm. Archive of about 181 pieces: 1 A.L.S.; 1 note in Ellis' hand at top of a document; Ellis' signature on three legal documents; copyright with seal for one of his books; six royalty receipts; copy of review of Psychology of Sex recommending it become a textbook for medical students. Also various letters, copies of letters (some from Ellis), documents, photos of Ellis, ads for his books, three-page letter on his last illness from caretaker, numerous papers on copyrights, taxes, royalties, contracts, and legal matters, from 1933 to 1977. Some defects, but generally good-fine. With Ellis' classic study, in three editions, of his book Psychology of Sex, each with dust jacket, cloth, 377 pp., comprising: 1) Signed copy. Emerson Books, N.Y., 1938. Toning at front and back hinges, else fine. Signature on verso of title page. 2) 1933, First Edition, Long & Smith, N.Y. 3) 1937, 7th printing.
