American actress (1895–1952) who earned a place in Hollywood history as the first African-American performer to win an Academy Award, for her memorable turn as Mammy in Gone With the Wind. Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of the actress seated in a polka dot dress, signed in fountain pen, “Best wishes from Hattie McDaniel ‘44.’” In fine condition, with a couple small brushes to end of signature and sentiment, and a couple of light bends. McDaniel is scarce in signed photos.
