hand-forged, and stamped "D. Sharpe" near the butt. The head with a tear-dropped eyelet, 4.25" x 3.25" showing evidence of heavy use and extensive resharpening. The handle with evidence of old-recycling, with rich patina and labeled in India ink "Ax captured from Indian in the Black Hawk War near Winneconne, Wis. gift from Wm. Stuart, July 26, 1896." Deaccessioned from the Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio. Old accession number "42.1377" in red enamel on edge of axe head.

<p>Condition of Items in the Sale. Cowan’s Historic Americana Auctions does not warrant the condition of any lot sold. ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD AS IS, and neither Cowan’s nor the consignor makes any warranties or representations of any kind or nature with respect to the property or it’s value, and in no event shall they be responsible for correctness of description, genuineness, attribution, provenance, authenticity, authorship, completeness, condition of the property or estimate of it’s value. No statement (oral or written) in the catalog, at the auction, or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty or representation, or any assumption of responsibility.

<p>Estimates. Pre-sale estimates of the expected hammer price of each lot are provided for the convenience of prospective bidders. In most cases, they do not represent reserves. Bidders are encouraged to bid what they feel an item is worth.

<p>HOW DO I BID?
<p>Internet bidding through icollector and ebaylive auctions is offered as a service to our customers, and prospective bidders shall not hold the auctioneer or his staff responsible for any errors or failures in executing bids, nor shall they hold the auctioneer responsible for any failure due to the loss of the auction applet supplied to Cowan’s by ebayliveauctions.
