Chapman, S.H. & H. THE COLLECTION OF MR. SAMUEL A. BISPHAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, CONTAINING MANY FINE AND RARE PIECES. New York, Feb. 11-12, 1880. 8vo, original gilt-printed white paper covers. (4), 38 pages; 1024 lots. Hand-priced throughout in pencil with floor buyers’ names or initials and other annotations. Covers a trifle worn and dusty; once folded. Very good. Captain John W. Haseltine’s sales room copy. Inscribed in black ink at top of front wrapper: “Bids/J. W. Haseltine / 1225 Chestnut St / Phila.” Unique and most interesting. Haseltine is clearly supporting the early efforts of his protégés. A key on the last page records no fewer than three dozen collectors on whose behalf Haseltine was bidding. While he takes exception to the stated condition of some lots, there is no meanness in his appraisals. Included is a pencil sketch of a bearded and mustachioed male with a cap, perhaps a sale participant? A sketch of a machete is found elsewhere. A note pertaining to lot 123, a 1799 silver dollar selling at $18.50 to Cogan, reads: “Send one as good to Sampson at $6.00.” A number of other interesting notes are also present. Ex John J. Ford, Jr. library (Kolbe Sale 96, lot 1031).
