ALS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 15, 1952. Letter to Secretary of State Dean Acheson. In full: “Matt handed me your note of the 13th. You are the diplomat par excellence. When I see you we’ll have a conversation about it all. I would be proud to appear anywhere with you from Yale to 1908 Main in Kansas City. (That’s the address of the Pendergast Club). Will see you when I get over the present political spasm. My best to Mrs. Acheson.” In fine condition. Truman’s mention of the “Pendergast Club” is particularly interesting as it refers to the organization of Missouri political machine boss Tom Pendergast, who had helped Truman launch his career; despite Truman’s honest integrity, this association was often a point of criticism early on in his public life. The “political spasm” he mentions must be a reference to the upcoming 1952 election in which Dwight Eisenhower, as predicted, swept to a commanding victory. Handwritten letters by Truman as president are rare, with this example improved by its notable political associations.
