TLS signed “Harry,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, June 14, 1955. Letter to former Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder, in full: “I am enclosing a chapter on the financial picture of the administration which is to go into the second volume of the Memoirs and on which you were so helpful. The publishers have asked drastic cutting of the more than a million and a half words that were written so that the published memoirs can be held to a half million words. All chapters have had to be trimmed. I am sure this chapter contains the essential picture, but would you be good enough to read as quickly as possible so that I may have it here in time to make any changes if necessary to get the book in by June 30.” Truman adds a handwritten postscript, “What a meeting that was in Cleveland! Had a humdinger in Portland Saturday too. They’ve had to force me to talk to the UN too. What a quiet life I’m leading!” In fine condition. Accompanied by onionskin carbon copies of Snyder’s reply and subsequent suggestions for his memoirs. Spanning his time as a senator through his exit from the White House, Truman’s memoirs were published by Doubleday in two expansive volumes—1955’s Year of Decisions, and 1956’s Years of Trial and Hope.
