ALS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, March 7, 1951. Letter to Jane Hadley Barkley, the wife of Vice President Alben Barkley, in full: “I certainly appreciated your note about the presentation to Alben. I enjoyed the ceremony very much and so did he. You should have come down and joined the party. I’m getting a lot of sleep and sunshine—but it is already monotonous!” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in the president’s own hand. Nearly four decades after his first day in Congress, Vice President Alben Barkley was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal on March 1, 1951. As a surprise gesture, President Truman appeared on the Senate floor to deliver the award along with a gavel made from timber recovered from the White House renovation of 1949–51. Truman ALSs as president are quite uncommon, this one even more so with such a crisp, legible middle initial.
