Vintage fountain pen signature and inscription, as president, “To the 228th Infantry Regiment, Illinois National Guard, with best wishes for its continued success. The Guard is the first line! Harry S. Truman White House Nov. 8 1949,” on a light brown 6.75 x 3.75 trimmed photo mount. In fine condition. A request was made to President Truman on Nov. 1, 1949, for a signed photograph for the 228th Infantry Regiment specifically asking the President to ‘show that their Guard is a national necessity.’ Accompanied by photocopies of letters from Matthew J. Connelly, secretary to the President, and letter sent by Lt. Col. Frederick L. Lochbihler requesting this autograph.
