Signed book: The Budget 1947. Washington, D.C.: United States Government Printing Office, 1946. Green leather hardcover, 9.5 x 12, 974 pages. Truman has signed at the end of his State of the Union address on page LXXV (75), next to the printed date of January 14, 1946. President Truman’s State of the Union address precedes his proposed budget; he recalls that "in his last Message on the State of the Union delivered one year ago, President Roosevelt said,…'1945 can see the final ending of the Nazi-Fascist reign of terror in Europe. 1945 can see the closing of the forces of retribution about the center of the malignant power of imperialistic Japan. Most important of all, 1945 can and must see the substantial beginning of the organization of world peace.' All those hopes, and more, were fulfilled in the year 1945…At Potsdam, in July 1945, Marshal Stalin, Prime Ministers Churchill and Attlee, and I met to exchange views primarily with respect to Germany." In very good to fine condition, with light edge wear to covers and spine, flecks of surface loss primarily along hinge, rubbing to boards, and a few creased pages. Historic insight into a post-war America as it prepares for the future.
