Harry S. Truman WWII Signed Speech
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Harry S. Truman World War II-date signed speech delivered to the American Legion Convention. 7pp., legal folio, entitled, “Speech of Honorable Harry S. Truman to American Legion Convention, Chicago, Illinois, September 18, 1944 – 11 o’clock A.M.” Below is typewritten, “Release on Delivery.” After first discussing the provisions of the “Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944,” known as the G.I. Bill of Rights, Truman stated the following (in part): “This largest of Veteran’s Organizations faces a very great responsibility now, and in the immediate future...The War Department has issued a demobilization plan to become effective as soon as Germany is knocked out of the war. Of course, the sooner that comes, the better pleased we’ll all be. We want to see as many of our young men come home alive as possible. But win the war in Germany—we must—thoroughly and completely—this time. And then we have a settlement in full to make with the treacherous Japanese. But when the war ends with Germany—men will be immediately available for discharge from the armed services...The country’s affairs will, in all probability, be in the hands of Veterans, just as those affairs were after the War for Independence, in the hands of Revolutionary Veterans; just as they were in the hands of the Veterans of the War between the States after 1865, and of World War I Veterans to a very great extent now. I am confident that the things for which this great Republic has stood and stands for today—will be safe in the hands of the men who were willing to fight and die, if necessary, all around the world,—to prevent the spread of totalitarianism, tyranny, and dictatorship. They fought to make that greatest of all documents for Government—the Constitution of the United States,—stand as our ideal, and I have enough confidence in them to know that they will continue to uphold and defend it for future generations.” Signed, with sentiment, in ink at the top of the speech, “Best wishes, Harry Truman USS MO.” An excellent document from the soon-to-be-President Truman. Some creasing along the folds; otherwise, in fine condition.
